You can lose weight from starving yourself, but depending on how much body fat you have it can take some time. Your body will shut down at first and go into survival mode. After it realizes that no new food is coming in it will start to feed off of your body fat. By the way, I don't recommend this, it is dangerous and you can hurt your body. After your body feed on all the fat it will go after your muscles, which means your heart, because it's one big muscle. |

If you starve yourself, you do lose weight. Just not like you think you do. When you starve yourself your body starts to feed on your muscle tissue and then starts on your internal organs. So, you do lose weight, just not the type of weight you want to lose. As your muscle tissue is being eaten you become flabby or skeletal and which the muscle is loss, there's no getting it back. Anorexia nervosa is the clinical term for the illness. It basically means an obsessive compulsion or distorted body image the patient sees or has which causes them to not eat anything or eat very little to survive. |

When people say that you don't lose weight starving yourself they are telling you a truth. Healthy weight loss and keeping that weight off involves nourishing your body. If starvation was what kept us all at healthy weights we would have no need for food at all...this problem would never exist! The minute you try and have a healthy diet again after starving yourself you will pile on the weight you lost and more. Anorexia is an illness and shouldn't be used as a dieting guide. |

You do lose weight from starving yourself if you do it long enough. But at first you won't because your body doesn't know when it is going to get food so it tries to keep all the food it has. |

Anorexia is more of a mental illness. people with this illness think they are overweight when they're not. they starve themselves but it's not just because they think they're overweight. it could be because they feel like they need to control something in their lives. for example if there has been a death in the family or a divorce then that person feels like they cant control anything in their lives besides their body weight. anorexia mostly happens in teen girls but it can also happen in older adults and males. when people starve themselves, their body goes into starvation mode, so anything they eat will instantly be transferred to fat on the body because it doesnt know when the next time your going to eat. if someone has been starving themselves for a few days and then they have a craving for junk food, they give into their craving. most likely they will overeat lots of fatty foods and the body will store all of it as fat. so you can actually end up gaining weight. the only reason why anorexics can lose so much weight by starving themselves is because they are so determined to lose weight that they know they wont ever be tempted by junk food and they wont give in to their cravings. |

Hi there, I think you might be getting a little mixed up with what you want exactly. You say that you want to lose "weight " but that means you might want to get rid of some muscle too. You then say that you'd like to "shape " (I'd call it tone) your body a little which implies you want to build some muscle. I'm not trying to pick at your question - I just want to clarify the point for you. To answer it in the best way, I am going to look at it as if you want to get rid of fat AND build muscle at the same time. If you're looking to "trim " and "tone " your body, and espectially because you suggest you are not that overweight, I would suggest you start performing more intensive aerobic exercises such as jogging. I wouldn't think you need to change the whole way you eat or go on a diet because if you're wanting to build muscles - it's better to do it all with exercise. Exercises like jogging won't exactly "build " your muscles on your stomach but they will help reduce the extra fat around there. Depending on how fit you are, you should go on daily or bi-daily jogs of around a mile. To build muscles, you should concentrate on anaerobic exercises such as sit-ups to help build muscles. These muscle-building exercises will give your muscles the toning and training they need to grow and become more prominent. To start to see a real difference with sit-ups, you should be looking to do no more than 100 every day (more than that will often hurt your muscles). If you stick to doing those two forms of exercise - jogging and sit-ups, you should see real improvements in a week or two. Remember, you should do them as often as you can (I.E every single day). |

Excess weight or obesity is by far the number one health concern in this country. Sixty percent of Americans are either overweight or obese, including over 20 percent of teenagers. All are at risk for serious physical and emotional health problems. |
